SC Closes Legal Doors for Convict in Pratyusha Case, Says No Grounds for Interference
The Supreme Court has effectively closed the remaining legal avenues for the convict in the Pratyusha death case by dismissing his plea and finding no grounds for interference with the lower court’s verdict.
The bench emphasized that appellate intervention is warranted only in exceptional circumstances. After hearing arguments, the Court concluded that the case did not meet the threshold required for setting aside or modifying the conviction.
The plea had sought reconsideration of both conviction and sentencing. Defense counsel argued that humanitarian considerations and alleged inconsistencies in the prosecution’s narrative merited relief. However, the Court underscored that concurrent findings of fact must be respected unless demonstrably perverse.
The tragic death of actress Pratyusha had led to intense public discourse and scrutiny. Over time, the case progressed through investigation, trial, and appellate review, with each stage reinforcing the original findings.
Legal experts suggest that the Supreme Court’s stance aligns with established principles governing criminal appeals. The judiciary, they note, must balance the rights of the accused with the integrity of judicial outcomes.
The directive to surrender brings immediate consequences for the convict, who must now comply with the sentence imposed earlier.
For the deceased actress’s family, the ruling is a reaffirmation of their long pursuit of justice. They expressed hope that the decision would deter similar offenses and reinforce accountability.
The judgment concludes a significant chapter in a case that has remained in public memory due to the circumstances surrounding Pratyusha’s death. While the emotional impact endures, the legal proceedings have now reached a conclusive point.
