Protesters Breach Barriers at U.S. Consulate in Karachi; Security Forces Fire Tear Gas, Eight Killed
In a dramatic escalation of unrest tied to tensions in the Middle East, demonstrations outside the U.S. Consulate in Karachi turned deadly on Sunday, killing eight people and injuring dozens. The protest, organized by groups sympathetic to Iran following the reported killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint U.S.-Israeli strike, drew hundreds of participants who attempted to breach consular defenses.
Witnesses described chaos as young demonstrators scaled the consulate’s outer walls and made their way onto the driveway, smashing windows and shouting anti-American and anti-Israel slogans. Emergency responders confirmed that at least 20 people were treated for injuries, many from gunshot wounds, while local hospitals struggled to manage the influx of victims.
Karachi’s police reacted swiftly, firing tear gas and using baton charges to disperse the crowd. Law enforcement reported that they resorted to force after repeated attempts by protesters to press closer to the consulate’s interior compound. Authorities said they were working to reestablish control and prevent further escalation.
The protests in Karachi reflected broader public anger over developments in the Middle East, with demonstrators accusing the United States and Israel of aggression and expressing solidarity with Iran. Despite not being directly involved in the conflict, many in Pakistan view such events through the lens of religious affiliation and regional politics.
Elsewhere in Pakistan, thousands joined marches in Lahore, while an office of the United Nations in Skardu was set on fire amid anti-West sentiment. Demonstrations were also expected near Islamabad’s diplomatic district later in the day.
The Pakistani government raised alert levels around foreign missions and restricted movements near sensitive areas to prevent further clashes. Security officials emphasized that protecting diplomatic premises and maintaining public order were priorities amid volatile conditions.
