With Assam Polls Approaching, BJP and Congress Face Hurdles in Finalising Alliances and Seat-Sharing Deals
Alliance Talks Intensify as Assam Assembly Elections Approach
Political Activity Picks Up Ahead of 2026 Polls
With the 2026 Assam Assembly elections drawing closer, political momentum is steadily building across the state. Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (Congress) are engaged in crucial negotiations to finalise alliances and seat-sharing arrangements. However, discussions remain ongoing, and final agreements are yet to be sealed.
The outcome of these negotiations is expected to significantly influence the political landscape in the state.
NDA Yet to Finalise Seat Distribution
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has indicated its intention to contest all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam. Despite this announcement, seat-sharing discussions with its regional allies are still underway.
Allies such as the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) are reportedly negotiating the number of constituencies they will contest. While talks are said to be progressing, a few key constituencies remain points of contention.
Congress Faces Coordination Challenges
On the other side, the Congress is working to bring together opposition forces to form a broader anti-BJP alliance. The party has been in discussions with regional outfits such as Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).
However, differences over seat distribution have slowed down the process. Smaller parties are reportedly seeking a larger share of constituencies, while Congress is trying to balance its own electoral ambitions with the need for alliance unity. These negotiations have created delays in announcing a final seat-sharing formula.
Internal Pressures and Political Shifts
Adding to Congress’s concerns are internal challenges and political shifts within the state. Leaders switching sides and strategic recalibrations have contributed to uncertainty within opposition ranks.
The BJP, meanwhile, continues to project confidence and has intensified grassroots mobilisation efforts. Party leaders have urged workers to strengthen booth-level presence and consolidate voter outreach ahead of the polls.
Election Preparations Underway
As political negotiations continue, preparations for the elections are gaining pace. The Election Commission of India is expected to finalise the poll schedule in the coming weeks.
Political observers believe that once alliances and seat-sharing arrangements are confirmed, campaigning will shift into high gear, with both sides focusing on key issues such as development, governance, and regional identity.
High-Stakes Contest Ahead
With both the ruling alliance and the opposition yet to complete their seat-sharing deals, Assam’s electoral battle remains wide open. The final structure of alliances could play a decisive role in shaping voter sentiment and the eventual outcome of the 2026 Assembly elections.
