Taiwan Remains One of the Most Sensitive Issues Between Washington and Beijing

Taiwan continues to represent one of the most difficult strategic questions in US-China relations. Despite the diplomatic emphasis on stability during the Washington summit, fundamental differences over Taiwan remain.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly opposed moves that it views as supporting Taiwanese independence. The United States maintains longstanding relations with Taiwan and provides it with military equipment, while also maintaining a policy framework that does not formally recognise Taiwan as an independent state.

The result is a complicated strategic balance.

Washington wants Taiwan to have the ability to defend itself, while Beijing views American military support for the island as interference in what it considers an internal Chinese matter.

This disagreement has become particularly significant as military tensions around the Taiwan Strait have increased over recent years.

According to Al Jazeera’s reporting before the summit, Taiwan was expected to be among the subjects discussed by Trump and Xi. The issue of American arms sales to Taiwan was particularly important, with a second package reportedly remaining on hold after an earlier large arms sale had been approved.

For Beijing, limiting or delaying American military support for Taiwan is a longstanding strategic priority.

For Washington, arms sales are part of its broader security relationship with Taiwan and its approach to maintaining stability in the region.

The summit therefore had to balance two competing objectives: maintaining communication while avoiding commitments that either side might interpret as a fundamental change in policy.

This is why military communication is particularly important.

Xi has called for greater military-to-military dialogue and stronger mechanisms for preventing accidental escalation. Such communication can be important when two militaries operate in the same strategic environment but have different interests.

The danger is not necessarily that either side intends to begin a conflict. Miscalculations, accidents or misunderstandings can also create crises.

A military hotline or regular senior-level communication can provide a channel for clarification during periods of heightened tension.

The Taiwan issue also has implications beyond China and the United States. Japan, South Korea, Australia and other countries closely watch developments in the Taiwan Strait because of its geographic and economic importance.

The Taiwan Strait is located along major shipping and trade routes, while Taiwan itself plays an important role in the global semiconductor industry.

Any serious crisis would therefore have economic consequences far beyond East Asia.

For financial markets and multinational companies, the central concern is uncertainty. A major deterioration in US-China relations over Taiwan could affect investment decisions, insurance costs, shipping routes and technology supply chains.

The Washington summit’s emphasis on dialogue therefore matters even without a major policy breakthrough.

The meeting did not eliminate the fundamental disagreement over Taiwan. Instead, it provided another opportunity for the two leaders to communicate directly and attempt to keep the issue from becoming an uncontrolled source of confrontation.

The future of the Taiwan question will continue to depend on military developments, diplomatic decisions, domestic politics in Taiwan, US policy and China’s broader strategic calculations.

The summit demonstrated that Taiwan remains central to the US-China relationship. At the same time, the willingness of the two leaders to continue direct dialogue indicates the importance both governments place on managing the risks associated with this sensitive issue.
