Mumbai Coastal Road Tragedy: BMW Crashes Through Barrier, Three Young Lives Lost

Three people were killed and another was critically injured after a BMW crashed through a barrier and fell from a bridge on Mumbai’s Coastal Road in the early hours of Sunday.

The accident took place around 5:20 a.m. when the vehicle was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali. The car reportedly approached the area near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College, before the driver allegedly lost control.

CCTV footage from the area shows the BMW moving rapidly before striking the roadside barrier. The impact sent the vehicle off the elevated section of the road. It fell into an area being used for construction of a parking facility.

The crash caused extensive damage to the vehicle. The four occupants were subsequently taken to Nair Hospital. Despite emergency efforts, three people died.

Among those identified were 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal and 17-year-old Dhairya Seth. Police said the third deceased occupant was a man believed to be around 25 years old, although his identity had not been established in the initial report.

The fourth occupant, estimated to be around 20 years old, suffered serious injuries and was receiving treatment in the hospital’s trauma ward.

The accident immediately prompted a police investigation. Officers are examining the CCTV footage, the location of the crash and the condition of the vehicle. The investigation will seek to determine why the BMW went through the barrier and whether excessive speed or another factor contributed to the loss of control.

The Coastal Road has been developed as a major transportation corridor in Mumbai. It is designed to improve travel between South Mumbai and western areas while reducing pressure on existing roads.

Because of its design, motorists can travel at relatively high speeds on some sections. NDTV reported that the maximum speed on the main carriageway is 80 kmph, with lower speed restrictions on tunnels, ramps, curves and interchanges.

The accident highlights the importance of following those restrictions. At high speeds, a sudden loss of control can dramatically reduce the time available for a driver to react.

The CCTV recording is particularly important because it may allow investigators to reconstruct the final moments before the collision. Authorities can compare the footage with the physical evidence found at the crash site.

Investigators may also examine whether there were any issues involving the vehicle, road surface or visibility. Since the crash occurred before sunrise, conditions at the time of the accident could also form part of the broader investigation, although no final conclusion has been announced.

Police have not yet publicly established a definitive cause of the accident.

The deaths have caused shock because of the young age of at least two of the victims. A 17-year-old and a 21-year-old were among those who lost their lives in the crash.

As the investigation continues, authorities will work to establish the circumstances behind the BMW’s movement, the driver’s actions and the precise point at which control was lost.

The incident once again underlines the consequences that can follow when a vehicle leaves a controlled roadway at high speed.
