Putin Visit Preparations Intensify as Three Russian Planes Land at Noida Airport
Preparations for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming India visit have intensified with the arrival of three Russian military aircraft at Noida Airport. The aircraft landed early Tuesday morning and marked the first reported foreign aircraft landing at the newly operational airport.
The planes arrived at approximately 5:30 a.m., with one identified as an IL-76 military transport aircraft. Reports said a Russian advance team and military officials travelled aboard the aircraft. Their arrival comes just before the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
The aircraft remained at Noida Airport through Wednesday as Indian security personnel and Russian teams worked around the aircraft and monitored the arrangements.
The deployment is being viewed in the context of Putin’s expected participation in the BRICS Summit. The summit will be held at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13 and is expected to bring together several international leaders and senior government representatives.
A visit by a head of state requires extensive advance preparation. Security teams generally coordinate routes, airport movements, communications, accommodation and other logistical requirements well before the principal delegation arrives.
The arrival of the Russian aircraft therefore provides a visible indication that preparations for Putin’s visit have moved into an advanced stage.
It is also a significant moment for Noida Airport. Foreign military aircraft have traditionally arrived through Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport when visiting India. The Russian aircraft using Noida Airport demonstrates that the new facility can play a role in supporting international diplomatic movements.
The development comes amid broader preparations across the National Capital Region. Security agencies are expected to coordinate closely as leaders travel between airports, hotels, meeting venues and other official locations.
Putin’s visit is likely to attract considerable attention because India and Russia maintain a long-standing strategic partnership. Defence cooperation has historically been a major pillar of bilateral relations.
Reports indicate that defence issues could feature prominently in discussions between Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Possible areas include the remaining S-400 air-defence system deliveries, potential cooperation involving the Su-57 fighter aircraft and the future of the BrahMos programme.
The two countries have also maintained cooperation across energy, trade, space, technology and other sectors. Consequently, the presidential visit could cover a wide range of strategic and economic issues.
Still, the landing of the three Russian aircraft should primarily be seen as part of the operational preparations for the visit and summit rather than as evidence of any specific diplomatic agreement.
For Noida Airport, however, the event is undeniably important. Its first foreign aircraft landing has occurred in connection with one of the year’s most significant international diplomatic events hosted by India.
As the BRICS Summit draws closer, the airport is now part of the broader infrastructure supporting the arrival and movement of international dignitaries.
