One Suspect Held After Gunfire in Delhi Minor Assault Investigation
Delhi Police have apprehended one suspect in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Astha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir. Police said the suspect was caught following an exchange of fire in southeast Delhi.
The case began with a PCR call received at approximately 8:45 pm on Monday concerning an alleged rape near Kalkaji Mandir and the ISKCON Temple.
According to police, the victim, aged 17, had visited Kalkaji Mandir with a male friend of the same age. The two reportedly arrived at the temple around 7 pm and subsequently entered Astha Kunj Park at approximately 7:30 pm.
Police said three men approached the teenagers inside the park. The suspects, reportedly aged between 25 and 30, allegedly claimed to be police officers and threatened the pair.
The victim told investigators that one of the men held her friend while the three allegedly sexually assaulted her. The suspects then reportedly left the area after threatening the teenagers.
After receiving the PCR information, officers from Amar Colony police station reached the park. The victim and her friend were located, and police began recording their accounts.
The victim underwent a medical examination at AIIMS. Crime and forensic teams also examined the location and collected material considered relevant to the investigation.
Police registered a case under the POCSO Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators then formed multiple teams to locate the suspects.
During the investigation, police received information that one of the alleged suspects, identified as Asif, was present near DM Office Road in Amar Colony.
A police team reportedly set up an operation to apprehend him. According to police, Asif opened fire when officers attempted to intercept him. Officials said he fired three rounds.
One bullet reportedly struck the bulletproof jacket of Head Constable Rajesh. Police said the officer responded by firing two rounds in self-defence, one of which hit Asif in his right leg.
The suspect was then apprehended and shifted to AIIMS Trauma Centre for medical treatment.
A forensic team was subsequently called to the location of the exchange of fire. Police said evidence was collected and further legal proceedings were initiated.
The apprehension of one suspect represents one stage of the investigation, but the other two alleged suspects remained at large according to the latest reports. Police continued efforts to locate them.
Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from the park and surrounding areas. Such footage may help establish when the suspects entered or left the area and could assist in corroborating the accounts given during the investigation.
The case involves a minor, meaning that proceedings are governed in part by the protections and procedures under the POCSO Act. Authorities are continuing to investigate the allegations and determine the precise circumstances surrounding the incident.
