Captain Smit Machchhar’s actions during a terrifying mid-air emergency have drawn praise from Indian and international leaders after a Flydubai aircraft was forced to divert to Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar was flying Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a confrontation reportedly broke out inside the cockpit.

The aircraft had 174 people on board, including 27 children.

According to reports, Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot and suffered serious injuries. During the confrontation, the aircraft reportedly entered a sharp descent, losing thousands of feet in a short period.

The captain nevertheless remained involved in the effort to prevent the situation from becoming a catastrophe.

Reports say Machchhar opened the cockpit door while injured, enabling passengers and other crew members to enter. They helped overpower and restrain the alleged attacker.

Several passengers later described the atmosphere inside the aircraft as chaotic. Once the cockpit was secured, pilots travelling among the passengers helped with the aircraft’s operation.

The flight was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

The injured captain was taken to hospital. Indian officials later said he had received initial treatment in Saudi Arabia before being shifted to Abu Dhabi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first major Indian leaders to publicly praise Machchhar. Modi described him as a hero and said his actions helped save hundreds of lives.

In his remarks at the UPSC centenary event, Modi said Machchhar had demonstrated the highest form of courage and described the incident as preventing another “9/11-like” attack.

The comparison refers to the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, when hijacked commercial aircraft were deliberately crashed into targets. In the Flydubai case, however, authorities are still investigating the precise circumstances surrounding the cockpit incident and the alleged attempt to take control of the aircraft.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Machchhar and the passengers who intervened.

The captain’s professional career has helped explain why he was trusted with a commercial flight. Machchhar reportedly joined SpiceJet in 2011 and worked there for about 11 years. During his career, he held positions including Senior Commander and Line Training Captain. He joined Flydubai in June 2022 as a captain.

His professional profile indicates extensive experience on Boeing 737 aircraft.

The emergency has also highlighted the importance of teamwork during aviation crises. Although Machchhar was the captain at the centre of the incident, passengers, medical professionals and other pilots reportedly played important roles in stabilising the situation.

One passenger, reportedly a dentist, provided medical assistance to Machchhar while the aircraft was still dealing with the emergency.

The airline and authorities are expected to examine the incident in detail, including the circumstances of the confrontation, cockpit security procedures and the aircraft’s rapid descent.

For now, the most immediate concern remains Machchhar’s recovery.

His actions have already generated widespread public appreciation, but the final findings of the investigation will be important in establishing exactly how the emergency unfolded.
