What was meant to be a peaceful protest by the Tamil Nadu BJP against the state’s liquor distribution system turned chaotic today, resulting in the arrest of prominent BJP leaders, including K. Annamalai and Tamilisai Soundararajan, at the Tasmac headquarters in Chennai. The protest was organized to highlight the growing concern over alcohol addiction and its impact on families in Tamil Nadu.

As the leaders gathered outside the Tasmac office to initiate the protest, a heavy police presence was deployed to prevent the demonstration from escalating. Police quickly detained the BJP leaders for violating public order laws and blocking traffic, triggering a heated exchange between the protesters and the law enforcement officers.

BJP supporters gathered at the scene, expressing their frustration over the government’s inability to address the social issues arising from widespread alcohol consumption. Annamalai, who has been an outspoken critic of the state’s liquor policy, argued that Tamil Nadu’s dependence on Tasmac revenue is not just economically irresponsible but also morally indefensible. He has repeatedly called for the closure of state-run liquor outlets and the establishment of alternative welfare programs to support the state’s finances.

Meanwhile, Tamilisai Soundararajan, speaking at the scene before her arrest, described the government’s stance as “anti-family” and “destructive” to the social fabric of the state. Her remarks were met with chants of solidarity from the gathered crowd. The BJP’s position on the issue is that the state government has failed to enact policies that protect the health and well-being of its citizens, focusing instead on maintaining its control over alcohol sales.

Despite the arrests, the BJP leadership has vowed to continue their efforts to reform the state’s liquor policies, even as they face backlash from their political rivals.
