Centre’s Rajya Sabha Response: US Tariff Claims Overstated, India’s Position Remains Firm

In a session of the Rajya Sabha, the Indian government issued a strong response to the recent claims made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding India’s tariff policies. Sunil Barthwal, the Commerce Secretary, refuted Trump’s assertions that India had agreed to reduce tariffs on American goods. Barthwal clarified that the Indian government had not made any such commitment and that tariff reductions would only be considered as part of a balanced and comprehensive trade agreement.
President Trump had criticized India’s tariff regime, calling it unfair and detrimental to U.S. interests. However, Barthwal emphasized that India’s tariffs are designed to protect domestic industries, particularly in sectors like agriculture, textiles, and manufacturing, where cheap foreign imports could hurt local producers. Barthwal reassured lawmakers that India’s approach to trade policy is rooted in protecting national interests while pursuing fair and equitable trade relations with all nations.
The Centre’s response in the Rajya Sabha made it clear that India is committed to maintaining a balanced trade relationship with the U.S. but would not be pressured into unilateral tariff reductions. Barthwal stressed that the negotiations between India and the U.S. are ongoing, and India would continue to defend its economic interests throughout the process.
In his address, Barthwal further discussed India’s broader trade strategy, noting that the government is open to lowering tariffs in certain areas, but only as part of a larger trade deal that provides mutual benefits. He emphasized that India’s economic policy is designed to ensure long-term stability and growth, and that tariffs are a key instrument in maintaining that stability.
The government’s firm stance in Parliament reflected India’s commitment to protecting domestic industries and maintaining a strong position in international trade negotiations. Barthwal concluded by reiterating that India would continue to engage with the U.S. on trade matters but would do so on terms that are fair and beneficial to both parties.
