Rape Allegation Triggers Student Anger at LPU as Police Move In to Restore Order

A serious student safety controversy at Lovely Professional University in Punjab’s Phagwara turned into a major law-and-order situation on Sunday after reports of an alleged rape circulated widely online. Students gathered on campus, property was damaged and traffic was disrupted after the protest spread to a nearby highway.

The incident unfolded overnight when messages concerning an alleged assault on a female student began circulating among students. Because the messages spread rapidly through social media, large numbers of students reportedly became aware of the claim before authorities had publicly established what had happened.

Students assembled near the girls’ hostel at around 2 a.m. The gathering was reportedly motivated by concerns about the alleged assault and the safety of students living on campus.

The situation soon became confrontational. Reports said students broke window panes, damaged university property and threw objects. Some parts of the campus were also affected by fire during the unrest.

As the crowd expanded, the protest moved toward the main gate. Students eventually blocked the road outside the university, affecting traffic between Phagwara and Jalandhar.

Police were called to the campus and deployed in significant numbers. Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora said officers had learned that rumours about an alleged rape had contributed to the gathering. He said police spoke to students and were attempting to resolve their concerns.

At the initial stage, police said they had no confirmed information establishing that the alleged crime had occurred. This led university officials to describe the social-media claims as misleading and urge students to remain calm.

Later reports, however, said investigators received a statement from a student and registered a case. Police indicated that technical investigation would form an important part of the inquiry. CCTV footage, phone records and forensic evidence were among the material expected to be examined.

The changing information illustrates the difficulty of reporting a rapidly developing incident. Early statements can reflect what authorities know at one moment, while subsequent evidence can change the investigative picture.

The allegation involves an extremely serious crime, and authorities have therefore been expected to investigate carefully. At the same time, the claims circulated online included details that had not been independently established.

The university’s response focused on preventing further unrest. Students were asked not to participate in disruptive activities and to remain in their hostels or residences.

The protest also brought forward other complaints. Police officials said students had raised concerns about the administration and felt that some issues were not being resolved properly. The alleged assault therefore became part of a wider atmosphere of dissatisfaction among some students.

Student safety in residential universities is a major administrative responsibility. Hostels typically involve large populations living away from their families, making security arrangements, access control and complaint mechanisms important parts of campus management.

The property damage also created a separate investigation. Authorities were expected to review available video footage and other evidence to identify individuals involved in vandalism or arson.

The incident demonstrates the risks of allowing unverified claims to become the basis for immediate collective action. Even when students have legitimate concerns about safety, acting on information that has not been independently confirmed can result in unintended consequences.

At the same time, the spread of a rumour does not mean every concern behind it should be dismissed. A responsible institutional response requires authorities to investigate complaints while communicating clearly enough to prevent misinformation from filling the information gap.

Police have indicated that the investigation will continue. Any determination about the alleged assault will depend on evidence gathered by investigators rather than social-media messages.

Meanwhile, university authorities face the task of restoring normal academic life and addressing students’ concerns about safety. The road blockade and campus damage have added urgency to efforts to calm the campus.

The LPU incident remains a developing story. The allegation that triggered the protest has not been conclusively established, while the unrest itself has resulted in documented disruption and property damage.
