G7 Summit 2025: India to Share Global South’s Voice as Modi Heads to Canada

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Kananaskis, Alberta, this month to attend the G7 Summit as an invited guest of host nation Canada. The summit, taking place from June 15–17, 2025, will bring together the world’s top leaders to address a series of pressing challenges, from economic inequality and climate disruption to AI governance and global health preparedness.
India, though not a member of the Group of Seven, has increasingly become a fixture at these summits. This year, Modi’s participation is viewed as crucial, especially as discussions aim to integrate perspectives from the Global South—nations that are often underrepresented in elite forums but bear the brunt of many global crises.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, chairing his first G7, has made it clear that the summit will be inclusive in scope. By inviting leaders like Modi, Carney aims to broaden the conversation beyond the traditional G7 nations and acknowledge the geopolitical shifts shaping international relations.
India is expected to raise issues that concern billions of people in emerging economies, including access to clean energy, digital inclusion, affordable healthcare, and fair trade policies. “India will bring to the table the voice of the developing world, ensuring their concerns are not sidelined in elite decision-making,” said Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra.
The summit’s setting—Kananaskis, a remote mountain town in the Canadian Rockies—is designed to offer leaders privacy and space for uninterrupted dialogue. Security is expected to be tight, and Canadian authorities have invested significantly in logistical and protective measures.
Prime Minister Modi will likely use the opportunity to meet one-on-one with several G7 leaders, reinforcing India’s strong bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation. The summit is expected to offer a platform for India to present its leadership on clean tech, fintech, and digital governance, including its ongoing efforts to create ethical AI frameworks.
India’s consistent participation in G7 summits over the past five years signals its transformation from an invited observer to a valued strategic partner. As traditional power centers adapt to an increasingly multipolar world, India’s inclusion reflects the necessity of integrating non-G7 actors into global decision-making.
Ultimately, Modi’s presence will ensure that the concerns of the Global South—notably equitable development and climate justice—remain at the heart of the 2025 G7 agenda. With so much at stake, India’s participation is both symbolic and strategic—and likely to shape the global policy landscape in the months ahead.
