Nirmala Sitharaman Vows to Defend Indian Exports Against US Tariff Hike in Latest Statement

In response to the looming threat of increased tariffs from the United States, Nirmala Sitharaman, India’s Finance Minister, has vowed to take decisive action to defend India’s export sector. The US administration has proposed raising tariffs on Indian goods, which could jeopardize industries such as textiles, steel, and agricultural products, which have long been pillars of India’s export economy.
In her statement, Sitharaman highlighted that the Indian government was prepared to engage in multilateral discussions to address the issue, including through the WTO. Additionally, India is considering adjusting its internal policies to boost the competitiveness of its export sector and offering additional financial support to industries under pressure.
India’s strategy is centered on creating a more diverse export portfolio and looking for new trade opportunities in non-US markets. The government is also working on building stronger partnerships with countries across Asia and Africa to minimize the impact of US tariffs.
The Finance Minister’s commitment to supporting Indian exporters was evident, as she reassured businesses that the government would do everything in its power to mitigate the effects of higher US tariffs.
