Shelling Shatters Peace Along LoC: Pakistan Targets Civilians, 7 Dead, 38 Injured

The fragile peace along the Line of Control (LoC) was shattered once again as Pakistan Army resorted to heavy shelling on civilian areas in the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, killing seven and injuring at least 38 civilians. The incident, which occurred in the densely populated sectors of Kupwara and Poonch, has triggered panic among residents and prompted a swift military and humanitarian response from Indian authorities.
Witnesses say the shelling began in the early hours of the morning, catching villagers completely off guard. “The first blast was so loud that we thought it was an earthquake,” said Rafiqa Begum, a resident of Kupwara whose home was damaged. “By the time we understood it was shelling, debris was already flying through our windows.”
The indiscriminate attack caused significant damage to homes, schools, and livestock pens. Children preparing for school were among the injured, and two victims were reported to be senior citizens who could not reach underground shelters in time.
In response to the attack, the Indian Army launched targeted retaliatory strikes on Pakistani military installations along the LoC, reportedly inflicting significant damage on enemy positions. A senior Indian Army officer stated that the response was “measured but firm” and intended to protect civilian populations without escalating the conflict further.
Relief operations were immediately launched by the district administration. Medical teams, accompanied by army units, rushed to the affected villages with ambulances, medical supplies, and food rations. Makeshift shelters have been set up in government buildings and schools for families who lost their homes.
The Indian government issued a statement condemning the attack, calling it a gross violation of the 2003 ceasefire agreement and humanitarian principles. The Ministry of External Affairs has lodged a formal diplomatic protest with Pakistan and has urged global powers to take note of Islamabad’s repeated provocations.
This incident marks one of the deadliest cross-border attacks on civilians in recent times, further raising concerns about the volatile security environment in the region. As the situation remains tense, local leaders have called for more robust infrastructure to protect border residents, including reinforced bunkers, early warning systems, and permanent evacuation plans.
For now, fear grips the villages near the LoC, where families live under constant threat. “We don’t want revenge,” said one local mother as she comforted her wounded son. “We just want our children to grow up without the sound of bombs.”
