Supreme Court Questions Government on Efforts to Curb Obscenity on Digital Platforms
The Supreme Court of India has questioned the government’s current efforts to tackle the spread of obscene content on digital platforms. The Court has emphasized that the government needs to create stronger laws to regulate such material and protect vulnerable citizens, especially minors, from exposure. As online platforms continue to grow, concerns have been raised about the lack of oversight and the limited action being taken against those who upload explicit content.
The Court’s intervention comes at a time when there is increasing public demand for stricter controls on social media platforms and video-sharing websites. Many child protection organizations have pointed out that, without effective regulations, the internet remains a breeding ground for harmful content. The government has been urged to prioritize this issue and formulate a comprehensive strategy to protect the digital space from exploitation.
The Union Government’s response will be keenly awaited, with experts expecting them to take a strong stance on online content regulation. There is also anticipation that the government might work with international organizations and other nations to create a unified approach to managing online obscenity.
