Gyanesh Kumar Row Expands as Political Parties Seek Greater Transparency From Poll Body

The controversy surrounding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission has entered a new phase after political allies of the ruling coalition also called for greater clarity from the poll body.

The latest development follows reports of internal objections by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi concerning several aspects of electoral-roll management and the Special Intensive Revision.

The Election Commission has rejected the suggestion that these objections demonstrate a failure of collective functioning. It has said that different opinions and technical suggestions are part of normal institutional deliberations and that final decisions were taken unanimously.

However, demands for clarification have now come from different political quarters.

On September 26, Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan, Rashtriya Lok Morcha chief Upendra Kushwaha and TDP leader Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu called for the Election Commission to address questions surrounding the reported internal differences. Their stated emphasis was on public confidence in the electoral system.

The development adds a new dimension to the controversy.

The issue initially emerged largely through criticism from opposition parties following reports that the two Election Commissioners had raised objections repeatedly during the previous 10 months. According to The Indian Express, the objections covered issues including voter registration, deletion and restoration of names, changes to Form 6 and electoral-roll database management.

The Election Commission has argued that the reports should not be interpreted as evidence that final decisions were taken without the participation of all three commissioners.

At the same time, the political discussion has highlighted the importance of institutional communication.

The Election Commission plays a unique role in India’s democratic system. It supervises elections and maintains electoral rolls, meaning that public confidence in its neutrality and procedures is central to the credibility of elections.

The SIR exercise has intensified that scrutiny because electoral-roll revision directly concerns who appears on voter lists.

The Commission says such revision is intended to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls. Critics have raised questions about the criteria and procedures used to identify discrepancies and communicate with affected voters.

The Supreme Court’s recent intervention in Delhi has added another layer to the discussion. The Court asked the EC to explain the rationale behind notices categorised as relating to “logical discrepancies” and raised concerns about how some notices appeared to have been issued.

These developments have made transparency a central theme of the debate.

The Election Commission has also sought to defend its digital infrastructure. It has said that platforms such as ECINet are protected by security protocols and that electoral reforms and actions taken by the Commission comply with the applicable legal framework.

The current dispute therefore has several interconnected elements: reported internal objections, the Commission’s explanation of those objections, questions surrounding SIR and demands for greater public transparency.

For Gyanesh Kumar, the controversy comes at a time when the Election Commission is overseeing major electoral-roll processes and preparing for future electoral activities.

The Commission’s official record shows that Kumar has repeatedly emphasised the importance of accurate electoral rolls and voter participation. In May 2026, while addressing an ECI legal conference, he described the connection between accurate rolls and credible elections as central to the electoral process.

The coming days may therefore focus less on political accusations and more on documentation: what decisions were made, what objections were recorded, what legal procedures were followed and how the Commission reached its final positions.
