BJP Cries Foul After Suvendu Adhikari Associate Chandranath Rath Killed in Bengal Violence
Fresh political controversy erupted in West Bengal after Chandranath Rath, believed to be a close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was killed in a shooting incident linked to alleged post-election violence. The incident has triggered sharp exchanges between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the ruling Trinamool Congress, further escalating the already tense political climate in the state.
Rath reportedly came under attack in a locality considered politically sensitive. Sources claimed armed men approached him unexpectedly and fired several rounds before fleeing the scene. Residents rushed him to hospital, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
The BJP wasted no time in blaming political rivals for the killing. Senior leaders alleged that opposition workers were being systematically targeted after the Assembly election results. Suvendu Adhikari called the incident “an assault on democracy” and urged the Union government to ensure justice for the victim’s family.
Party supporters staged demonstrations across several districts, accusing the state administration of failing to protect opposition workers. Protesters demanded the arrest of those responsible and sought intervention from central investigative agencies. BJP workers also alleged that many of their local leaders were living under fear due to repeated threats and intimidation.
The Trinamool Congress denied involvement and criticised the BJP for making allegations without evidence. Party spokespersons stated that the law would take its course and appealed for calm. They accused opposition parties of trying to tarnish Bengal’s image by portraying every criminal incident as politically motivated.
Police authorities confirmed that forensic teams had been deployed and CCTV footage from nearby areas was being examined. Investigators were reportedly questioning several suspects and trying to establish whether the killing was directly linked to political rivalry or stemmed from local disputes.
Political violence has long been a contentious issue in West Bengal. Every election cycle witnesses allegations of intimidation, clashes, and attacks involving rival party workers. Experts say the intense competition for political dominance at the grassroots level often leads to conflict in districts where party loyalties run deep.
Local residents expressed fear after the shooting, with many shops shutting early and security forces patrolling the area. Community leaders appealed for peace and warned against retaliatory violence that could further destabilise the region.
Observers believe the incident could have broader political implications. The BJP is likely to use Rath’s death to highlight concerns about political freedom and law enforcement in Bengal, while the ruling party may attempt to counter allegations by stressing the need for impartial investigations.
Civil society organisations have also called for an independent inquiry into political killings in the state. Activists argue that repeated violence undermines democratic participation and discourages ordinary citizens from engaging in political activities.
As Bengal continues to grapple with post-election tensions, the killing of Chandranath Rath has become another reminder of the fragile relationship between politics and public safety in the state. The coming days are expected to witness intense political debates as investigators work to uncover the truth behind the deadly attack.
