From Student Protest to Political Storm: Bihar AK-47 Video Intensifies NEET Controversy

A police action in Siwan has become the latest flashpoint in the ongoing political storm surrounding student protests and the NEET controversy. A viral video allegedly showing a Bihar policeman using an AK-47 during a protest has led to the officer’s suspension and sparked criticism from opposition leaders. The incident has now transformed a local confrontation into a national debate about student safety, police accountability and the government’s response to public anger.

The protest took place during the Bihar Bandh on July 25. Student organisations and supporters had been demonstrating against alleged irregularities related to the NEET-UG examination. The issue had already generated anger among students and families, who have raised concerns about fairness, examination security and accountability. As demonstrations spread, tensions reportedly increased at several locations.

In Siwan, a video circulated showing a police constable carrying an AK-47. The footage became viral within hours. Social media users began asking why such a weapon was being used during a protest involving students and whether the officer had been authorised to fire. The questions were amplified by opposition politicians, who presented the video as evidence of what they described as excessive force against young protesters.

The Bihar Police moved quickly after the video gained attention. The constable, who was posted with the District Intelligence Unit, was suspended with immediate effect. Departmental proceedings were initiated, and an inquiry was ordered to determine what happened. The Siwan SP said that no one was injured in the firing, but other accounts concerning the wider protest have reported injuries and conflicting claims. Because of these differences, officials are expected to examine the complete sequence of events.

The political reaction was particularly strong because the incident occurred at a time when the student movement had already become a major issue. Opposition parties have argued that students protesting over examination-related concerns should not face excessive force. Rahul Gandhi criticised what he described as a dangerous system targeting students, while Bihar opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav questioned who authorised the use of such a weapon. These statements pushed the issue into national political discourse.

The government and police authorities, however, are likely to focus on the need to establish facts before reaching conclusions. A short viral video may not reveal whether protesters were violent, whether the weapon was fired in the air, whether ammunition was live or blank, or whether the officer was responding to an immediate threat. These details are crucial to understanding the legality and proportionality of the action.

Yet, even before the inquiry is complete, the incident has already affected public perception. For many people, the image of a police officer carrying an AK-47 during a student demonstration has become symbolic of a larger concern: whether the state is responding to public dissent with force rather than dialogue.
