At least nine people, including a child, were killed after a devastating fire broke out at a hotel in central Kolkata early Wednesday. Reports indicate that the victims included Bangladeshi nationals who had travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment, adding an international dimension to the tragedy.

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. on Mirza Ghalib Street, an area close to some of central Kolkata’s busiest commercial and tourist locations. The blaze was reported while people inside the building were likely asleep, increasing the danger posed by the rapidly spreading smoke.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after the fire was detected. Firefighters arrived and began rescue operations inside the building. Police and disaster-management personnel also joined the response as emergency teams attempted to locate people who were trapped.

Nine people died in the incident, while several others were rescued and taken to hospital. Initial reports identified the victims as Bangladeshi nationals, including women and a child. Reports said they had travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment.

The deaths have created a painful situation for families who may be waiting for information from authorities in both India and Bangladesh. Identification of victims and communication with relatives will be an important part of the response.

The fire’s exact cause remains unclear. Preliminary reports have mentioned a possible air-conditioner explosion, but officials have not yet reached a final conclusion. Investigators will examine the equipment and electrical systems inside the building to establish how the fire started.

The incident also highlights Kolkata’s role as a major destination for medical visitors from neighbouring Bangladesh. Many Bangladeshi patients and their relatives travel to Kolkata for treatment and stay in hotels and guest houses near hospitals and commercial areas. The loss of several such visitors in the fire is therefore likely to generate concern among people who regularly travel across the border for medical care.

Fire safety in hotels is particularly important because guests are often unfamiliar with the building. Unlike permanent residents, they may not know where emergency exits are located or how to respond if an alarm sounds. During a night-time fire, this lack of familiarity can become dangerous.

Authorities will need to determine whether the hotel had appropriate safety systems and whether they were functioning. Investigators may examine fire extinguishers, alarms, electrical wiring, emergency exits, staircases and other safety features.

The incident comes against the backdrop of previous deadly hotel fires in Kolkata. In 2025, a fire at Hotel Rituraj in Burrabazar killed 14 people and led to scrutiny of emergency exits, firefighting systems and building conditions.

That history makes the latest incident particularly significant. If investigators discover violations or failures, authorities may face pressure to conduct wider inspections of hotels and guest houses throughout central Kolkata.

For the families of the victims, the immediate concern is grief and recovery. The death of a child makes the tragedy especially devastating. Those who survived and were injured will also require medical treatment and support.

The fire has once again demonstrated that building safety is a shared responsibility involving owners, operators, employees, regulators and emergency services. Regulations are meaningful only when they are properly implemented and regularly checked.

As the investigation progresses, officials will be expected to establish the precise cause of the blaze and determine whether any negligence contributed to the deaths.

The Kolkata hotel fire is a tragedy that has affected people from both sides of the India-Bangladesh border. Beyond the immediate rescue operation, it has raised important questions about how safely hotels accommodate visitors and whether enough is being done to prevent similar disasters in the future.
