Shehzad Poonawalla’s resignation from the BJP has drawn attention because he has made it clear that leaving the party organisation does not mean ending his support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Poonawalla, who has served as one of the BJP’s national spokespersons, submitted his resignation again on August 17, 2026. He requested BJP president Nitin Nabin to accept his resignation and relieve him from both his organisational responsibilities and primary membership.

The former spokesperson has cited pressing financial and personal circumstances as the primary reasons for his decision. He has said that he intends to move into the private sector, indicating that his resignation is connected to a significant career transition.

The development follows an earlier resignation attempt on July 30. At that time, the BJP reportedly did not accept his resignation and asked him to reconsider. Poonawalla said he was grateful that the party had wanted him to continue, but after considerable reflection, he decided to proceed with his resignation.

His latest letter also refers to certain individuals and events from the previous few days. Poonawalla has not publicly identified the people involved or provided detailed allegations, meaning the exact nature of those circumstances remains unclear.

What makes the development particularly interesting is his continued expression of support for the BJP’s political leadership.

Poonawalla has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and organisational general secretary B L Santosh. He has spoken positively about the opportunities and political platform he received during his years with the party.

He has also said that although he is leaving the organisational structure, he will continue supporting the vision and work of Prime Minister Modi and the BJP wherever possible.

This suggests that Poonawalla sees a distinction between political organisation and political ideology. He is stepping away from formal party responsibilities but does not appear to be abandoning the political positions he has publicly supported.

Poonawalla became one of the BJP’s most visible television representatives after joining the party in late 2021. He frequently participated in political debates and defended BJP policies on national platforms. His aggressive debating style and familiarity with opposition arguments made him a regular presence in political discussions.

Before joining the BJP, Poonawalla had been associated with the Congress. He gained attention for questioning the Congress leadership and its internal political processes before eventually moving into the BJP.

His departure now marks a change in his political career. Instead of continuing as a full-time political spokesperson, he plans to enter the private sector.

The decision could also change his public role. Without an official party position, Poonawalla may no longer be required to defend the BJP on a daily basis. However, his statement that he will continue supporting Modi and the BJP indicates that he may remain politically engaged in some form.

At this stage, there is no indication that he is joining another political party. His stated immediate priority is to address his personal and financial circumstances and pursue opportunities in the private sector.

Poonawalla’s resignation therefore represents an unusual political transition. He is leaving the BJP’s formal organisational structure while maintaining his stated political support for its leadership and broader vision.

The coming months will show whether his career remains primarily focused on the private sector or whether he eventually returns to active politics in another capacity.
