NTA Submits Affidavit to SC, Announces Major Changes in NEET Examination Process

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a series of major reforms in the NEET examination process through an affidavit submitted before the Supreme Court following the controversy over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak. The affidavit outlines corrective measures aimed at enhancing transparency, improving security, and restoring public confidence in one of India’s largest competitive examinations.

The NEET-UG examination serves as the gateway for admission to undergraduate medical courses across India and is taken annually by millions of students. However, the 2024 examination came under scrutiny after allegations emerged that question papers had been leaked before the exam. The issue triggered nationwide protests, legal petitions, and calls for strict action against those responsible.

Several students and parents approached the Supreme Court claiming that the alleged leak compromised the fairness of the examination and adversely affected deserving candidates. In response, the apex court sought explanations from the NTA and directed authorities to examine the matter carefully.

In its affidavit, the NTA acknowledged the seriousness of the concerns raised and stated that comprehensive reforms are being introduced to strengthen the integrity of future examinations. The NTA also informed the court that the transportation process for question papers would undergo major changes. Another important measure involves the introduction of biometric verification systems at examination centers. The agency plans to implement fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, and live digital attendance verification to prevent impersonation and ensure accurate candidate identification.

The affidavit further mentioned that examination centers would be selected only after rigorous security evaluations. Institutions with poor surveillance systems or previous records of irregularities may be disqualified from conducting future examinations. The NTA also proposed closer coordination with law enforcement agencies and district administrations. Special control rooms and monitoring teams may be deployed during examination days to quickly respond to suspicious activities or complaints of malpractice.

In addition to physical security measures, the agency plans to use artificial intelligence-based monitoring systems. AI tools may help identify unusual examination patterns, abnormal score trends, and organized cheating attempts. Experts believe such technology-driven reforms could significantly improve the credibility of national-level examinations.

The NEET-UG controversy has sparked widespread debate about examination reforms in India. Education experts, student organizations, and policymakers have stressed the need for stronger institutional safeguards to protect students from unfair practices and systemic lapses.

During previous hearings, the Supreme Court observed that any negligence in conducting competitive examinations could seriously impact the careers of lakhs of students. The court emphasized that maintaining public trust in the examination system is essential for preserving merit-based admissions.

Meanwhile, investigative agencies continue probing the alleged paper leak. Multiple arrests have reportedly been made in connection with organized cheating networks operating across different states. Authorities are examining the possibility of larger interstate connections involved in illegally accessing examination papers.

The NTA assured the Supreme Court that it remains committed to conducting examinations in a transparent, fair, and secure manner. The agency stated that the proposed reforms are designed to eliminate loopholes and ensure that future NEET examinations uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability.
