Shivakumar: No Immediate Fix for Bengaluru’s Problems, Urban Growth Needs Time

Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar recently addressed concerns regarding the rapid urban growth of Bengaluru, acknowledging that immediate fixes for the city’s infrastructural issues are unrealistic. In his statement, he remarked that even divine intervention would not bring about the changes that are needed to fix the city’s challenges overnight.
Bengaluru’s growing pains have been evident for some time now, with issues ranging from traffic jams to poor waste management systems and inadequate public transport. Despite being one of India’s most important cities, Bengaluru’s urban planning struggles have often been a point of contention.
Shivakumar explained that while the government is working on various fronts to improve Bengaluru’s infrastructure, these efforts are part of a multi-year strategy that cannot deliver immediate results. The state government is implementing plans for road upgrades, metro network expansions, and improved waste management to deal with the city’s growth.
He also emphasized the importance of urban policies that cater to future generations, saying that sustainable development is key to ensuring Bengaluru’s future prosperity. According to Shivakumar, it is only through collective effort and a focused, long-term vision that Bengaluru can reach its full potential.
