BJP Dominates Delhi’s Civic Polls: Raja Iqbal Singh to Take Over as Mayor Amid AAP’s Absence

In a move that solidifies the BJP’s dominance in Delhi’s municipal politics, Raja Iqbal Singh has been elected the new Mayor of Delhi. The election, held on April 25, 2025, saw the BJP emerge victorious without facing any opposition after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) decided to boycott the mayoral poll. Singh’s election is another example of the BJP asserting its influence in the capital city’s civic governance, further complicating the rivalry with the AAP, which holds the reins of Delhi’s Legislative Assembly.
Raja Iqbal Singh: A Seasoned Leader with Strong Credentials
Raja Iqbal Singh, a veteran BJP leader, is no stranger to municipal administration. Having previously served as the Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, he has substantial experience in managing urban development issues, particularly sanitation, infrastructure, and health services. His appointment is seen as a logical step by the BJP to place an experienced leader in charge of the MCD, which oversees critical civic services across the city.
Known for his straightforward approach and efficient handling of public concerns, Singh’s tenure in North Delhi was marked by efforts to streamline waste management, improve road maintenance, and address public health concerns. His experience is expected to be pivotal in addressing the immediate challenges facing the MCD, including improving civic infrastructure and urban planning in the wake of rising pollution and rapid urbanization.
A Boycotted Election: AAP’s Strategic Withdrawal
Despite having the largest number of elected representatives in the MCD, the AAP chose to boycott the mayoral election, citing dissatisfaction with the transparency of the process. The party alleged that the BJP had manipulated the proceedings by interfering in the selection of presiding officers, thus skewing the outcome in its favor.
AAP’s leader, Arvind Kejriwal, expressed frustration over what he called an undemocratic process and claimed that the BJP had undermined the constitutional norms governing the MCD. “We will not take part in a rigged election. The BJP is responsible for creating an atmosphere of distrust,” Kejriwal said, adding that the AAP would focus on raising awareness among the public about the BJP’s alleged wrongdoings.
A BJP-Led MCD: What’s Next for Delhi?
Raja Iqbal Singh’s election will have several significant implications for Delhi’s future, especially concerning urban governance and civic management. The MCD is responsible for critical services such as waste management, water supply, public health, sanitation, and urban planning. Over the years, the BJP has positioned itself as the primary party for addressing these needs in Delhi, despite strong competition from AAP.
Singh’s key agenda as Mayor will likely include improving the capital’s sanitation systems, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing civic amenities in the wake of the city’s rapid expansion. Additionally, addressing waste management will be at the forefront of his administration, with Delhi generating over 11,000 metric tonnes of waste daily. Environmental sustainability, particularly in tackling air and water pollution, will also be central to his policies.
The BJP’s success in securing the mayoral seat without contest allows it to assert more control over the MCD, thus creating a pathway for implementing urban reforms without the political gridlock that might have come from a coalition government.
Political Reactions and Public Sentiment
While the BJP celebrates its unchallenged win, AAP’s absence has raised questions about the future political dynamics in Delhi. Some political analysts argue that AAP’s boycott was a poor decision, effectively giving up power in the MCD despite holding a strong position. AAP’s supporters argue, however, that the decision was taken to protest what they see as systemic injustice and manipulation of the democratic process by the BJP.
In contrast, BJP supporters have lauded the party for securing the post in a fair manner, given their overwhelming presence in the MCD. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, congratulating Singh on his victory, expressed confidence that under his leadership, the MCD would witness a significant improvement in infrastructure and public services.
However, public sentiment remains divided. Citizens of Delhi have expressed hope that the new Mayor will focus on practical solutions to persistent issues such as clogged drains, erratic waste collection, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. “We just want things to work properly, no matter who is in charge,” said Kamal Singh, a local resident.
