Heavy Rains Pound Kerala: IMD Declares Red Alert in Eight Districts Amid Flood, Landslide Risk

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a red alert in eight districts of Kerala as intense monsoon rainfall continues to lash the state. The districts on high alert are Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
The red alert signifies a high probability of extremely heavy rainfall, likely to lead to flash floods, landslides, river overflows, and severe traffic disruption. Kerala, known for its vulnerability to monsoon-triggered disasters, is once again staring at a critical situation.
In several parts of the state, rainfall over the past 48 hours has crossed alarming levels. Idukki district, a known landslide hotspot, has already witnessed soil erosion in parts of Munnar and adjoining hill ranges. The district administration has evacuated families from vulnerable zones and set up relief shelters in community centers and schools.
Pathanamthitta and Kottayam have reported river swelling, with many households in flood-prone areas moving to higher ground. Rescue teams are actively coordinating with local panchayats to ensure timely response in case of emergencies. In Wayanad and Kozhikode, landslip risks have prompted authorities to close hill routes and monitor key highways.
Urban districts like Ernakulam are dealing with severe waterlogging and stormwater overflow. Emergency services have been deployed to clear blocked drains and prevent flooding in critical infrastructure zones such as hospitals and public transport hubs.
The state’s power infrastructure has also come under stress. Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has urged citizens to report fallen lines and exercise caution in flooded areas to avoid electrocution. Power restoration teams are working round the clock despite harsh weather conditions.
The state government has activated disaster control rooms and helplines across all affected districts. The Health Department has also issued a general health advisory to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases in the aftermath of the flooding.
According to the IMD, the heavy rain is likely to continue for the next 48–72 hours, with the possibility of isolated extremely heavy rainfall. Orange and yellow alerts have also been issued for nearby districts, indicating widespread rain activity across the state.
People have been advised to remain indoors, stock essential supplies, and follow updates from district administrations and the IMD. While Kerala has weathered similar storms in the past, authorities are emphasizing caution and community cooperation to mitigate damage.
