Israel Strikes Gaza’s Only Cancer Care Center, Amplifying Humanitarian Crisis

In a shocking escalation of violence in Gaza, Israel has destroyed the Al-Quds Cancer Center, the only facility in the region dedicated to providing cancer treatment. The airstrike, which obliterated the hospital, has left thousands of cancer patients without the specialized care they desperately need.
The Al-Quds Cancer Center had been the sole provider of oncology services in Gaza, offering treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and palliative care for cancer patients. The facility was crucial for patients who had no access to care outside the region due to the ongoing blockade and the lack of alternative treatment options in Gaza. With the destruction of the hospital, these patients are now left with few, if any, options for continued care.
The bombing occurred amid escalating tensions in Gaza, where Israel has been conducting a series of airstrikes targeting what it claims are Hamas-linked sites. However, the attack on the cancer hospital has drawn widespread condemnation from medical professionals, human rights groups, and the international community. Critics argue that regardless of any alleged military use of the facility, the hospital was primarily a civilian establishment and should have been afforded protection under international law.
Reports from Gaza indicate that several patients were undergoing treatment at the time of the airstrike, though it is unclear how many individuals were inside the hospital when it was hit. Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to search through the rubble, but the destruction is so extensive that finding survivors has proven difficult.
The bombing has raised serious questions about the targeting of civilian infrastructure during conflict. Medical organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have called for an immediate investigation into the attack, emphasizing that medical facilities should never be targeted in warfare. The Geneva Conventions explicitly prohibit attacks on hospitals and medical centers, yet this is not the first time that healthcare facilities in Gaza have been caught in the crossfire of military action.
The destruction of the Al-Quds Cancer Center is part of a broader pattern of attacks on Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure, which has left hospitals and clinics unable to provide adequate care to the civilian population. With the ongoing blockade limiting the import of medical supplies, the situation in Gaza has become increasingly dire.
The international community must take decisive action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This includes holding accountable those responsible for attacks on civilian infrastructure, providing assistance to those affected by the destruction, and ensuring that medical facilities are protected during armed conflict.
