On March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, devastating large swathes of the country and causing widespread panic. The quake, which hit in the morning hours, has already claimed 23 lives, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue teams search through the rubble.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in central Myanmar, around 40 kilometers southeast of Mandalay. The quake struck at 10:42 AM local time, and its tremors were felt as far as Thailand, where buildings swayed and people were forced to evacuate offices. In Myanmar, the destruction has been catastrophic, with buildings collapsing and vital infrastructure severely damaged.

In the immediate aftermath, Myanmar’s government declared a state of emergency and called for international aid to assist with rescue and relief efforts. The country’s disaster response teams have been working around the clock to rescue survivors and provide medical assistance to the injured. Hospitals in the affected regions are operating at full capacity, and more medical supplies are urgently needed.

The earthquake’s impact is especially severe in Mandalay and surrounding towns, where entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble. Many of the casualties are believed to be from collapsed buildings, as well as people caught in landslides triggered by the tremors.

The international community has stepped up to provide aid. Countries like Thailand, China, and India have sent teams to assist with rescue operations, while humanitarian organizations are mobilizing to provide food, shelter, and medical care to those displaced by the disaster. The ongoing aftershocks complicate efforts, but the international solidarity is helping Myanmar face this devastating challenge.
